Romania is experiencing a significant demographic transformation, characterised by a declining and rapidly ageing population. Low birth rates, increased life expectancy and the migration of a large share of the working-age population have contributed to profound changes in the country’s age structure.
Population ageing has accelerated particularly rapidly in recent decades. Between 2005 and 2025, the median age in Romania increased by 8.6 years, the largest increase recorded among EU countries over this period. At the same time, the proportion of older people continues to grow, while the younger and working-age population is shrinking.
These demographic changes create growing challenges in terms of access to healthcare and social services, long-term care and support for older people. They also reinforce the importance of preventing social isolation and ensuring that older people can remain active, connected and fully included in their communities.
We believe that a person’s life is valuable from beginning to end. Old age should not be a burden, but a stage of life lived with dignity, meaning and joy. That is why we intervene against isolation, marginalization and the painful effects of loneliness, the most pressing affliction among the elderly.
Through the involvement and kindness of volunteers, we bring friendship and a chosen family in lives where time scattered them away. We spend time together, visit, offer new socializing and learning experiences and build a space of trust, where seniors find their zest for life once more.
We make visible the problems created by loneliness and bring to light the unique life stories of the elderly. We help change mindsets so that the golden years are seen as a source of wisdom and value. We want the elderly in Romania to be seen, understood and supported. Together, we are committed to a future where no senior person lives nor leaves alone.
