Let’s mobilize against the isolation of the elderly at Christmas

Awareness campaigns to alert and engage the general public in the cause of isolation of the elderly.

Christmas is traditionally a time of joy, celebration and family reunion. But this is not the case for everyone, especially for the elderly who are already isolated during the year. For these people, Christmas is even the time of year when they feel most isolated and alone. A study conducted by Age UK in 2019 found that nearly 200,000 people spend Christmas Day alone in the UK. As in England, the number of elderly people alone during Christmas is significant in other countries around the world. The feeling of loneliness is further accentuated due to the fact that it is a traditionally warm time spent with family.

This is why the organizations of the International Federation of the Petits Freres des Pauvres are mobilizing more than ever at this time of year to collect donations and offer the best Christmas party to the elderly!

Amigos de los Mayores, in Spain, has chosen to alert the general public to the fact that thousands of elderly people have been forced to spend Christmas alone in 2020 because of covid and that each donation and each volunteer can really make a difference and allow an elderly person to have a nice Christmas this year. As for the Romanian organization, Niciodata Singur, it is launching a very large-scale campaign throughout the country. The campaign, very powerful, is based on the words of isolated elderly people, words that were collected during a qualitative survey on the phenomenon of solitude in Romania. With this new initiative, whose posters will be distributed throughout the country, Niciodata Singur’s teams hope to reach donors and remind them that loneliness remains extremely present among the elderly in Romania. Campaign to discover here.

Other organizations (Friends of the Elderly in Ireland and Les Petits Frères in Canada) offer donors the opportunity to write a greeting card for the elderly they serve. Thus, the donor, in addition to supporting the associations financially, has the opportunity to express his solidarity directly to the people, by adding a personal note. A good way to make a donation more personal!
