The Day of the Elderly in Germany

All five German locations of Freunde alter Menschen e.V. celebrated October 1, the international day of the elderly, with elders and volunteers. The activities were creative, diverse and ranged from workshops to a boat trip and a quiz of the generations. The focus was on the appreciation of the elderly and the get-together of old and young. A brief overview of the activities:

In Berlin, elders and volunteers sailed across the Havel River on a nostalgic steamer. On board, each participant was surprised with a rose to thank them for their company and friendship.

In Hamburg, the older generation showed the younger participants their skills in eight workshops, e.g. in dancing, canasta or pottery. A total of around 50 interested people took part, with the biggest crowds at the dancing workshop.

In Frankfurt, heads were spinning at the table quiz. Many elders, Frankfurt residents and volunteers came to test their knowledge of sports, culture or geography and to compete with and against each other.

In Cologne, the Palmer Hargreaves agency had invited to its premises. Nearly 40 elders and volunteers sang folk songs and local songs about their home city over coffee and cake with singer Katharinna Klaus.

In Munich, more than 100 elders and volunteers were presented with a bag of good luck. The recipients were delighted to receive jute bags with chocolate, tea and a personal card.

Together, let’s fight against the isolation and precariousness of the elderly!
