Bras dessus Bras dessous: A Commitment to Solidarity in 2023

The isolation of seniors in Belgium, as in all European countries, is increasing with the aging population. The causes of isolation are varied: widowhood, loss of mobility, and the breakdown of family ties, among others. In this context, the organization Bras dessus Bras dessous tirelessly continues its mission to combat loneliness and isolation among the elderly. In 2023, the association redoubled its efforts to create moments of sharing and conviviality through numerous events.

The association continues to grow. In 2023, 693 elderly individuals benefited from the actions of Bras dessus Bras dessous in Brussels and beyond. The organization is now present in four municipalities in Walloon Brabant and one municipality in Hainaut.

The past year was rich and innovative for the teams of Bras dessus Bras dessous. Here are the highlights of 2023.

A Glimpse in 2023…

Key Moments of the Year

  • The Long Christmas Tables and Home Deliveries

To celebrate the end-of-year holidays, Bras dessus Bras dessous organized festive meals at several of its branches. More than 250 people gathered around these tables, sharing warm and convivial moments. For the elderly who could not travel, the association delivered approximately 130 festive packages to their homes, bringing the magic of Christmas directly to them.

  • Flower Distribution

The association distributed 2,530 flowers on the streets of Brussels, Walloon Brabant, and Hainaut. This initiative aimed to bring joy and create moments of sharing among the inhabitants of these regions. The flowers, symbols of solidarity, helped to forge connections and combat the isolation of the elderly.

  • Health Literacy Project “I’ve Got All the Keys in Hand”

This innovative project aimed to train and raise awareness among the team and local partners about the importance of health literacy. In collaboration with the elderly, clear and tailored tools were developed to improve their health management. This initiative strengthened seniors’ autonomy and their ability to manage their well-being.

  • Opening of New Branches

The year 2023 saw the opening of new branches, notably in Saint-Gilles. These new establishments allow the organization to reach a wider audience and strengthen its presence on the ground. Each branch acts as a pillar of solidarity in its neighborhood, promoting intergenerational and intercultural encounters.

  • Collective Projects and Sharing Moments

More than 10,000 neighborhood moments were organized, including 158 collective events such as workshops, outings, and festive events. These activities brought together over 900 people during the five caravans held in various neighborhoods. These moments of sharing are essential to break the isolation and create a sense of community.

  • Holiday Trip for the Elderly

A trip to Wissant (a town in northern France) was organized for the elderly from Walloon Brabant. This vacation provided an opportunity for those who cannot afford a holiday to enjoy a pleasant setting. The participants were able to escape for the duration of the trip and create unforgettable memories.

  • Radio Mouette Project

The Radio Mouette project was successfully launched, offering a platform for expression and sharing for the elderly. This initiative aims to give seniors a voice, share their stories, and strengthen ties within the community. It is a radio station designed for and by the elderly. This project allows an underrepresented segment of the population in the media to have a voice.
